In this update - Results, quick tips, and #2 NABC Practice Tourney

First NABC Practice Tournament results
The first tournament to prepare our players for the NABC Online Individual was held over the weekend. After two days the honor roll:

1st tal410 75.60%
2nd Melik77 72.62%
3rd hstern 72.17%
4th bunta 72.14%
5th trinity05 72.02%

Final leaderboard can be reviewed here, though if you played in the event, you can access a nicer version highlighting your friends and your hand records by logging into BBO first, and clicking My BBO.

A few quick pointers and explanations
This first practice tournament does deviate from the actual event coming up in July as we have not completed some of the code changes required. As we draw closer to the big day, our practice tournaments will resemble the actual NABC tournament more. And we will hold at least one "full dress rehearsal", likely in the weekend preceeding the actual tournament where every single detail will resemble the full tournament as closely as we can make it.

For newcomers to this form of tournament, think of the practice tournaments as a way to dip your toes into the sometimes murky world of robot bridge. Of course, experienced robot players can just think of this as a bonus tournament to finetune your skills.

About "Best Hand"
ACBL's first NABC Online Individual uses "Best Hand" when dealing boards. You need to understand some implications of "Best Hand" style games.

“Best Hand” in this event means this: The human player will always receive at least the most High Card Points (HCP) for every deal. He may also tie for most HCP. (ie, East and South may each have 15 HCP, North and West each hold 10 HCP divided between their hands.) Some immediate thoughts about Best Hand style games:
  1. If you have 10 HCP in your hand, you can assume everyone else holds 10 HCP each.
  2. HCP is only one factor in hand evaluation; as a thinking human, you probably recognize the importance of shape and where your HCP are located, right?
  3. If you hold 10-12 HCP, you should recognize the likelihood of ending in a part score is relatively high.
  4. If you hold 16 or more HCP, you should recognize the likelihood of ending in a game or higher contract is relatively high.
  5. You can use the “Best Hand” information to help you declare and defend better.

Second NABC Practice Tournament
The second Practice Tournament series will be held July 5-6 (Wed-Thurs). This one is for ACBL members only.

If you wish to participate in this second practice tournament please make sure you have a valid ACBL number on file with BBO by July 4 (Tues). You can update your ACBL number by clicking ACBL World > Update ACBL number.

This practice tourney is still free, but we are going to deploy the Advanced Robots this time. We hope a renewed understanding of "Best Hand" will help you in this next tournament.

You will find the tournament in ACBL World.

Caveat: you need to login to BBO from our home page (our mobile app also works) to see and participate in all the NABC Online events!

May the Best Hand Force be with you!
