The Quest is On!

This season's NABC Online has officially begun. Participants, on each day of July 23-25 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) please log in, find your way to ACBL World and play your set of 24 boards each day. The tournament is available/disappears at the start and end of USA Eastern Time each day, and you can choose to start play anytime you like. However, from the moment you begin play, you get 12 hours to complete your set. Every board carries equal weight, and please do not discuss your boards with anyone else until the day's session has ended! For actual COC and FAQ you can refer to the event website.

For ACBL members who are on the fence, the NABC Online is still open for registration until 4 PM USA Eastern Time Monday July 23. Last call!

Another weekend, another 2 rounds of practice tournaments. From the results, it looked like our players were taking this tournament seriously. Kudos! Players were promised rewards - here are the players who received a free entry into the NABC Online this season based on their performance in the practice events. When a player qualified for 2 or more prizes, I have promoted the next player in line to win the free entry instead.

Practice Tournament 3 Day 1:
Flight A winner: AKQTxxx
Flight B winner: Fan_Fou
Flight C winner: alasdon

Practice Tournament 3 Day 2:
Flight A winner: Stop1
Flight B winner: Microcap
Flight C winner: Yhl123

Overall Winners
Flight A winners: TrialBid, Negso01, Kolesnik
Flight B winners: Hilto37, jwallbau, fuzzyquack
Flight C winners: Lastrose, aleatory, carmelbobC

Well done participants, and congrats to all the prize winners. We hope you enjoyed the practice tournament even if you don't intend to move on to the event proper.

Josh Donn's lecture this Sunday was a bit different. He decided to talk about a controversial topic - Psyching with GIBS. Here's a writeup for those who didn't get to attend his lecture. There was also an extensive Q&A after his presentation was over.

Officially we believe "creative" bidding with the robots (in an event with bidding of course!) is a valid game strategy. It is not going to work for everyone but if you are one of the players who believe you need to declare every board 3NT to go against the field for some reason, go for it. In general, the best players seem to prefer to bid normally and rely on superior cardplay for the points while the rest of us are more likely to need a lucky edge. Whatever technique you end up adapting, we believe you should enjoy yourself first and foremost. Don't be miserable while playing a game. What's the point of that?

This concludes your mission briefing for today. This message will self-destruct in a few days. Good luck, BBOer.
